Mathematics
The departmental aim is to encourage a love and passion of mathematics.
We want to encourage the skills that mathematicians have and give students every opportunity to practise these skills.
We achieve this by employing teaching methods and resources that enable all students to have equal access to mathematics and to experience success and enjoyment in their work. In the process, we aim for every student to maximise their individual potential
IGCSE
In 1st – 5th Form, pupils are set according to ability. Lower sets are kept small so that pupils can get more individualised support.
Exam Board: Edexcel Mathematics IGCSE
Additional Mathematics OCR FMSQ . Studied by the top set in 4th and 5th form providing an excellent stepping stone to A Level.
Staff are exceptionally well qualified. There is a wide range of experience within the department, which pupils can draw on both in and outside of lessons.
A LEVEL
Exam Board: Edexcel Mathematics Edexcel Further Further Mathematics
At A Level, the course is delivered by pairs of teachers who share the teaching of the Pure Maths and split the Applied teaching. There is also the chance to become a Maths Prefect to help with the running of this busy department and support the younger years.
Stretch and Challenge
We run lecture programmes to enrich students’ knowledge. Past speakers have included Simon Singh, Colin Wright, Matt Parker and Alex Bellos.
We enter the UKMT Mathematics challenges at 1st and 2nd Form, Intermediate (3rd, 4th and 5th Form) and Senior levels (6th Form) and the UKMT team challenges.
We enter a team in the Senior UKMT team challenge and for the British Maths Olympiad for Girls each year.
We run the “LWC Logic Cup” event for our feeder schools, where 15+ prep and junior schools bring their four best mathematicians to compete in some fun mathematical events.
