Canoeing

The Devizes to Westminster Canoe Race is known as the ‘canoeists Everest’. The 125 mile race has been held annually over the Easter weekend since 1948. It is a severe test of skill, physical and mental stamina and involves many months of dedication, training and preparation alongside a very determined character. LWC pupils have participated in the race for the last 25 Years and in 2023 returned with silverware in the form of second school team, only missing out by minutes in what was a very close race.

Swimming

LWC has its own indoor 4 lane, 25m pool which is used by many pupils for swimming, water polo and canoeing.

Swimming at LWC is open to all pupils regardless of their ability, from the recreational fitness swimmer to the swimmer who likes to compete. Training sessions are offered 3 times a week for senior pupils and junior pupils. Friendly galas are arranged against schools in our area, in the autumn and summer terms. For the more able club swimmers, the Hampshire Schools Championships held every year provides an opportunity for them to compete at a high level for the school. We also have pupils who join the swimming training as part of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.

Cross Country

Girls and Boys in all years who enjoy cross country are encouraged to take part in local friendly competitions. There are 3 races per term to fit around the major sports. Athletes are also entered for the District Cross Country Championships at both Junior and Senior levels and, if they come in the top 16, they are then selected to represent the District at County level. The College estate is a perfect setting for cross country running and we often host the Senior District Champs at LWC. We have close links with the Basingstoke athletics club for which our keener athletes and cross country runners have competed and train on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. LWC offers a minibus transport service from school for the club training nights in Basingstoke.
