Economics

LWC 1

Economics is a social science that is concerned with human behaviour. The study of how we as individuals, firms and Governments act.

Students will learn both Macro and Microeconomics and will be immersed in the greatest debates of our time. How can we solve the environmental problem? How do we promote equality across society? Was Brexit a good idea?

Students are assessed by three exams at the end of the second year

  • Paper 1 – Markets and Market Failure (Microeconomics)

  • Paper 2 – National and International Economy (Macroeconomics)

  • Paper 3 – Economic Principles and Issue (Synoptic)

The exams include multiple choice questions, as well as both short, written questions and several long essays.

Successful students will develop strong numerical and data skills and the ability to communicate their ideas effectively in written form.

Economics is one of the fastest growing subjects at University and is a degree course that is well valued by many employers. Economics classrooms are dynamic interactive spaces which aim to inspire the big questions to be asked.

Students are taught the theory and then expected to rigorously apply this to real world. Course content regularly shows the conflict between objectives that are held by different groups. Is promoting Growth at the cost of Environment and Equality a good thing?

Students are consistently asked to examine and stretch their own opinions to formulate arguments and counterbalances of great depth and sophistication.

LWC-day-2-oct-2022-5

Economics and human behaviour are at the forefront of our decisions and having a keen grasp of this allows students to go into an ever changing and VUCA world better equipped to understand the world around them. A key grasp of how markets work and how the world economies integrate gives a keener grasp of the issues faced by societies and how best to navigate them. The understanding of the impact of Russian Oil distortions, inflation and many more make Economics students more aware and engaged in society.
