Dan’s Story
“My time at LWC gave me independence, friendships for life and the belief that the right opportunity can change everything.”
After losing his father at the age of 11, Dan Primrose’s childhood changed dramatically.
His father died at sea in a storm off the east coast of the United States, leaving Dan’s mother to raise him and his younger sister alone. During this difficult time, Dan was given the opportunity to attend Lord Wandsworth College on a Foundation place.
The experience proved formative. At the College, Dan found a strong sense of community, developing friendships that have lasted throughout his life. Many of those friends remain close today, and they still share memories of school life, particularly their time playing rugby together. Sport became one of the defining aspects of his education, helping him build confidence, resilience and teamwork.
While Dan describes himself as naturally curious rather than strongly academic, he developed a particular interest in design and engineering during his time at school. Influential teachers helped nurture that curiosity, especially in design technology, where he discovered the satisfaction of building and creating things. Those early experiences would later shape his professional direction.
After leaving school, Dan spent several years travelling and sailing, following his long-standing passion for boats and the sea. Eventually he returned to education and studied yacht design at university, connecting with the field his father had worked in.
From there, his career expanded into engineering across several high-performance industries. Dan worked at McLaren and contributed to projects in areas including Formula One, advanced automotive engineering, aviation design and America’s Cup sailing programmes. Today he runs his own engineering consultancy, applying innovative materials and design thinking across a wide range of complex technical projects.
Looking back, Dan believes the Foundation place opened doors that would otherwise have been out of reach. It provided opportunities to learn, compete, travel and grow in ways that shaped both his confidence and his career. Perhaps most importantly, the experience gave him independence and lifelong friendships, along with the belief that background does not limit potential when the right opportunities are available.
