The Art School are very proud of Sadie K, who represented LWC at the London Regional Finals of the Articulation Prize 2023 at the V&A this week.
Sadie spoke eloquently about ‘The Sugar Shack’ by Ernie Barnes, a thought provoking work from 1976. The artwork featured on a Marvin Gaye album cover and celebrated the joy of dance in a segregated dance hall in mid 20th Century America.
The adjudicator, author Olivia Laing, described Sadie’s presentation as ‘a very composed and energetic account which worked so well in introducing the artist and travelled deep into the vibrating muscularity of his work.’
Sarah Brown, from Articulation, thanked all speakers for an incredible afternoon, stating what a privilege it had been to hear everyone’s presentations. She added that it had been a difficult decision to make, as all presentations had been of such high standard, and that all had spoken on a different range of subjects, ranging from the contemporary to the historical and the personal.
She thanked Sadie for an insight into Ernie Barnes’ ‘The Sugar Shack’ and ‘for revealing to us all a world of music, movement and art, and how they all connected,’ describing Sadie’s presentation as incredibly insightful.
