LWC Reaches National Finals!
The spring term saw two of LWC’s sports teams reach the finals of national competitions.
The Boys Under 15A Rugby Team finished runners-up in the U15 Continental Tyres Schools Cup.
Meanwhile, the Girls Under 18A Netball Team finished as silver medallists in the SnS National Trophy Finals.
LWC also closed the term on another sporting high, with the U18A, U16A, U15A and U14A teams all being crowned Hampshire County Champions in their respective age groups.
Headmaster, Adam Williams added, “LWC’s sport is flying, but the best part is that our pupils play with passion, grace, humility and a sense of adventure…not to mention plenty of competitive spirit! It’s terrific to see.”
College Comes Together for Foundation
A record-breaking £170,000 has been raised by LWC students, staff, parents and alumni as part of this year’s Giving Day.
The 36-hour fundraising marathon took place in the final week of term and involved a series of fun activities, including an ‘Around the World Challenge’, LWC’s Got Talent competition, and House social events such as a colour run (pictured).
Headmaster, Adam Williams was challenged to sing Candle in the Wind to Julyans Dining Hall and face his fears by canoeing on the Basingstoke Canal, alongside our Marathon Canoe Teams. Spoiler alert: He fell in four times and the less said about Candle in the Wind, the better.
The fundraising pot was boosted by an incredible £75,000, raised by a team of LWC parents, staff and alumni who completed a sponsored three-day trek in Iceland.
All of the money raised will go directly to our transformative Foundation, which helps those who have lost the support of one or both parents.
The Cotterill Cup!
It’s been a busy year for LWC’s Performing Arts Department.
Not content with delivering sell-out performances of Bugsy Malone to a packed Haymarket Theatre in Basingstoke in January, the last few weeks have seen another hugely popular Cotterill Cup Music Festival take place.
Our talented students took part in 145 performances in the space of ten hours; showcasing everything from singing to woodwind and strings to drums.
The Festival culminated in a Prizewinners’ Concert for those who finished at the top of each group.
LWC Director of Music, Aaron Parker reflected, “The Cotterill Cup is a celebration of music-making across all ages, abilities, instruments and voices. The standard this year was superb across the board, with beginner, intermediate and advanced -level musicians giving their all in an impressive all-day extravaganza of musical performance.”
Aiming High
LWC has a wide range of co-curricular activities, to satisfy any passion.
For inquisitive scientists, CanSat Club offers the opportunity to reach new heights.
The CanSat Competition is run by the European Space Agency and challenges students to simulate a satellite and integrate it within a space the size and shape of a drinks can.
Just before the end of term, LWC’s CanSat Team successfully launched their craft at Westcott Venture Park in Buckinghamshire.
Head of CanSat at LWC, Esther Haydock added, “Their launch was successful, with the can collecting data during its descent. You can read more about the launch in their own words on their website.”
The Future’s Bright
LWC’s Junior House is nearing the end of a one million pound redevelopment.
The listed building, designed by renowned British architect, Guy Dawber is home to Years 7 and 8 (1st and 2nd Form).
There’s been a complete upgrade of all washroom facilities and work continues to create new bedroom spaces, designed with each child in mind.
“We want the children to feel like they’re at home,” explains LWC Director of Estates, Lidia Pocock. “When they’re doing homework, we want them to feel as though they’re doing it at the kitchen table, not sitting at rows of desks….This is their place to be and we want them to feel comfortable.”
The work at Junior House is part of a rolling redevelopment programme for all Boarding Houses at LWC. There are also plans for up to three new Houses, along with an innovative centre for DT, Art, Computer Science and a 300-seat lecture theatre. A sector-leading fitness, health and wellbeing centre should be ready by September 2026. The College also hopes to build an additional astro pitch, cricket bubble and golf centre.
Summer Open Evening
We’re very much of the belief that one visit is never enough when it comes to choosing a school.
