There’s No Place Like LWC…

LWC’s musical has become an annual College highlight and this year’s was no exception.

The Wizard of Oz began a three-day run at The Haymarket in Basingstoke in January and received rave reviews.

Over 80 members of cast and crew (including a two-year-old crossbreed called Mabel) came together for the show, following months of preparation.

“It was a masterclass performance full of joy, sparkle, theatre, music and dance, all delivered with outstanding set design,” reflected 3rd Form reviewer, Imogen. “Dorothy’s multitasking of acting and dog-handling was a marvel to behold. It was a mesmerising production that I didn’t want to end!”

5th Former, Harry added, “It was a captivating performance, immersing you in the Land of Oz. It was both a cheerful and light-hearted production and I was swept away by the story.”

Results Place College in Top 1%

LWC’s 5th Form have collected iGCSE English Language results that place the College in the top 1% of schools, when it comes to progress made.

Students sat their English Language exams in November and collected their grades in January.

LWC’s Alps 1 status in English Language now sits alongside our Alps 1 award for Sixth Form, where we also rank in the top percentage of education providers for value-added.

Alps is a national benchmarking tool to measure how much progress students make in each subject, compared to those educated elsewhere in the country.

Angela Watson, LWC’s Deputy Head (Academic), concluded, “January’s GCSE outcomes reflect our commitment to ambitious, pupil-centred education. These results illustrate our belief in widening worlds by combining high academic standards with care, opportunity and a culture where everyone is supported to flourish.”

LWC Reaches National Finals

The Spring Term has seen our sports sides excelling across the College.

Our U15A Girls’ Football Team will play in the U15 ISFA Shield Final next month, following an extraordinary campaign which also saw them reach the U15 ISFA Cup Semi-Finals.

This Easter weekend, our Marathon Canoe Team fielded 13 boats for the gruelling Devizes to Westminster International Canoe Race and paddled 120 miles, whilst navigating 77 portages.

LWC’s U16A Boys’ Rugby Team became England 7s Plate Champions and reached the quarter-finals of the U16 Cup at the renowned Rosslyn Park National Schools Sevens.

Our U14A Boys’ Hockey Team finished runners-up in the England Hockey Tier 2 National Finals in Nottingham and our U13A Girls’ Cricket Team finished the Spring Term by competing in the regional finals of the ECB Girls’ U13 Schools Indoor Competition at Southampton’s Utilita Bowl.

Super Sixth Form

Exam season is only weeks away and LWC’s Upper Sixth Form are gearing up for the assessments, having secured a multitude of university and degree apprenticeship offers.

The 100-strong cohort is in receipt of just under 400 offers from universities including Oxford, Cambridge, Exeter, Durham, UCL, Cardiff and King’s. Over a third have received a ‘full house’ of offers from all five of their selected universities.

LWC’s Oxbridge Co-ordinator, Paul Donald, added, “At a time when LWC is seeing unprecedented numbers applying for and being interviewed by universities such as Oxford and Cambridge, I’m delighted that we have had another strong year of success. Students commit a huge amount of their time and energy to preparing an application and readying for rigorous interviews.”

Six Months of The Barn

March marked six months since LWC’s sector-leading strength and conditioning space first opened to students and what a difference it’s made.

The Barn is the first phase of our 2.5-million-pound investment in sport and fitness at LWC.

Top-of-the-range strength and conditioning equipment has now been joined by a suite of cardiovascular apparatus.

The space is managed by Strength & Conditioning Lead, James Hanly: “Having come from the world of professional sport, I can honestly say that The Barn is one of the best facilities I’ve had the privilege of working in,” he explained. “It’s world-class.

“The number of our young people signed up to use it for co-curricular activities speaks volumes about the impact we’re having on student experience,” he continued. “The Barn illustrates LWC’s commitment to both wellbeing and physical movement.”

“This School Changed My Life”

Lord Wandsworth College was initially founded to provide an education for children who had lost the support of one or both parents.

Upon his death, Baron Sydney Stern made a sizeable bequest to begin transforming lives; an aim which has remained in place for over 100 years.

Last month’s Foundation Day saw those impacted by the Lord Wandsworth Foundation gather to celebrate its work – including Patron and former rugby international, Ugo Monye, who revealed that the College dramatically changed the trajectory of his life.

Mr Monye joined LWC as a Foundationer at the age of 13 and described it as an “incubator for opportunity.”

The LWC community has so far helped to raise more than £50,000 this year through our Foundation Day Appeal & Online Auction.

You can read more about our Foundation Day event here.

We’re Growing

After the Easter holidays, we’ll be welcoming the largest number of students in our history to LWC.

For the 11th consecutive year, we’re seeing record numbers beginning the Summer Term within our 1200 acres.

Strong academic outcomes, together with an array of horizon-expanding opportunities, mean that many want to become part of the LWC community and they couldn’t be more welcome.
