We hope that this edition of The 1200 finds you well.
This is our way of keeping you up to date with everything going on at LWC, ahead of you joining our fantastic community.
Our end of term celebrations brought the curtain down on a remarkable year at the College.
We are now ranked in the top 65 schools in the country for academic results, have produced 15 county champion sports sides this year and have just received a glowing review in the Good Schools Guide. You can read more here.

News
Speech Day Success
The LWC community came together to mark an extraordinary year with Speech Day 2025 on Saturday, June 28th.
The day began with a Presentation of Colours, honouring success across Sport, Performing Arts, Creative Arts, Service and Leadership.
This was followed by musical performances from our talented musicians and Sternian Singers, reflections from our outgoing student Heads of College and a sharp-witted address from comedian, broadcaster and author, Andy Zaltzman.
Speech Day recognises the efforts and achievements of all across the College and was rounded off with House Picnics; an opportunity for students to celebrate with the parents and House staff who have supported them throughout the year.
LWC Makes the Shortlist
Back in 1922, LWC was created to provide an education for boys who had lost the support of one or both parents.
More than a hundred years later, we’ve just been shortlisted for Co-ed Independent School of the Year in the Independent Schools of the Year Awards 2025.
We’ve been widening worlds for decades and look forward to inspiring your children when they join us.
Transforming the 1200
The 1200 is buzzing with redevelopment work over the summer.
September looks set to see the completion of phase one of our new Sport, Fitness, Health and Adventure Centre.
This will feature a strength and conditioning suite as part of a £2.5 million project, aiming to provide sector-leading facilities.
There will be a new SEN Hub, providing an accessible base for our much-expanded team and a vibrant Library will sit at the heart of the College in a welcoming and well-equipped space.
The £1 million redevelopment of Junior House (home to our Year 7 and 8’s) also continues, as we upgrade this Grade ll listed home.
Boost to LWC’s SEN Team
We’ve already mentioned our investment in a new SEN Hub…
In June, LWC’s new Senior Head of Special Educational Needs and Inclusion began her role.
Brigitte Wood is a senior educational psychologist with more than 15 years of experience.
She holds a doctorate in educational psychology and has most recently been working as a specialist EP in Autism, with a local authority.
“I feel very privileged to be leading SEN and Inclusion at LWC,” Brigitte explained. “I’m excited to be working alongside such a passionate community, making sure every student has the support and opportunity they deserve.”
Brigitte’s arrival follows that of Alicia Jones as Lead SEND Practitioner in March, boosting LWC’s support for students with SEN requirements across the school, along with their families.
Change of Scenery
The last few weeks of term saw students embark upon trips all over the UK and beyond, in a bid to enrich their learning and develop character.
2nd Form headed north to the Lake District to take part in this year’s WAKTU Camp. WAKTU runs bespoke camps for elite sportspeople and LWC is the only school to enter into a partnership with the company. The aim is to unlock potential and build confidence through activities such as abseiling and cold-water immersion.
Our 4th Form Design and Textiles students explored the museums, fashion landmarks and design exhibitions of Paris.
Hadrian’s Wall was the destination for our 3rd and 4th Form Classicists, whilst our Lower Sixth Form Biologists and Geographers made their way to the coasts of South Wales and Somerset, respectively.
Next year, there are scheduled trips to Nepal, Iceland, The Netherlands, Italy, Austria and Dubai, alongside a kaleidoscope of domestic excursions designed to bring learning to life even more.
Celebrating our Magnificent Matrons
When your child arrives with us at LWC, they will be assigned to one of our eight Houses, whether they are a day pupil or a boarder.
This is where much magic happens, with each House providing a warm and welcoming community hub.
In the final few weeks of term, we celebrated those at the heart of the Houses: our incredible Matrons, as part of the Boarding Schools’ Association’s National Boarding Week.
“Matrons are the lungs of a boarding house,” explained Park Houseparent, Holly Hunter-Wright. “They breathe life into the space and create a home within the school setting, which we all look forward to stepping into every day.”
