LWC Speech Day 2025
Sarah Walker | 3 July 2025
“I love Speech Day,” reflected LWC Headmaster, Adam Williams, shortly before this year’s event got underway.
“I love the night before, standing alone in the great marquee at dusk. The air has that first whisper of chill and there’s not a soul about – just me, a microphone and the echo of lines to be spoken for the day ahead.
“Most of all, I love hearing the pupils on the day – memories told, laughter shared, applause rippling across the grounds. Then, that final, fleeting moment as the Upper Sixth step first from the tent to a standing ovation inside and the school, for just one heartbeat, is wholly, quietly, magnificently theirs.”
Lord Wandsworth College hosted Speech Day 2025 on Saturday, 28th June.
The day began with a Presentation of Colours by the Headmaster on Stern Lawn. These awards celebrated success across Sport, Performing Arts, Creative Arts, Service and Leadership.

This was followed by a Headmaster’s welcome in the Speech Day Marquee and a moving rendition of Abba’s Slipping Through My Fingers, performed by the LWC Choir and Sternian Singers.
Reflections were offered by outgoing Heads of College, Jensen and Grace who now hand the most senior student positions to William and Alice.

Comedian, broadcaster and author, Andy Zaltzman provided the main address, before honouring the many prize winners for their contribution to subject areas and disciplines from across the College. This included recognising students, nominated by the LWC community, for displaying excellent character – based upon the core beliefs of our pupils.
Winners of the LWC Character Awards included:
Charlotte: “She always puts others before herself and looks out for those who need support. Whether someone is feeling down or nervous, she is there to uplift and encourage.”
Ollie: “A great role model who truly embodies the core values of our school. He is always encouraging and supportive of those around him. Ollie is not only a great leader, but also a kind and loyal friend.”
Ivan: “He remains selfless, positive and inclusive. Ivan ensures that everyone feels seen, heard and valued. He greets others with genuine warmth, respect and care, no matter who they are. A remarkable role model whose quiet acts of kindness make a lasting impact.”
The day was rounded off with a performance by the LWC Concert Band, closing remarks from the Headmaster and the departure of the Upper Sixth Form, who were given a rapturous applause.
