LWC Reaches Final of Independent Schools of the Year Awards

Sarah Walker | 11 September 2026

Lord Wandsworth College is a finalist for the second consecutive year in the Independent Schools of the Year Awards.

The College has been shortlisted for Regional Independent School of the Year: South, alongside five other schools and despite a record number of entries this year.

LWC is deeply proud of its place in the landscape of the South. Its 1200-acre-campus in North East Hampshire was formed in 1922, when the school was created to provide an education for the orphaned children of agricultural workers. Since then, it has remained deeply rooted in this region.

LWC has maintained a working farm since its inception. It continues to provide an education for those predominantly based within 40 minutes of its campus and takes the stewardship of its land seriously; building a new curriculum around it.

Many of the College’s 130+ co-curricular activities take place at venues across the South and it maintains excellent links with the neighbouring village of Long Sutton and nearby RAF Odiham, Home of the UK’s Chinook Force.

In addition to the Regional Independent School of the Year Award, LWC has also been nominated for the Rising Star of the Year Award. This recognises the work of former LWC student, Thomas, who completed his A-level studies at the College this summer.

During his time at LWC, Thomas designed, built and developed a parabolic solar cooker, capable of saving thousands of lives from waterborne diseases in developing countries.

Inspired to take action after learning about a deadly cholera outbreak in Zimbabwe, Thomas and his friend, Oliver, created a cooker, powered by light and capable of boiling water within just 15 minutes. They instructed villagers in the African country on how to build their design and left them with the blueprints. Thomas and Oliver would go on to develop a second, more efficient cooker. They eventually donated 100 models of this latest device to hospitals, schools and charitable organisations in Zimbawe.

The winners of the Independent Schools of the Year Awards will be announced on Wednesday, 14th October.
