LWC Celebrates Speedgolf Success

Sarah Walker | 17 September 2024

Speedgolf may be fast and furious, but LWC helped set the pace at the British Championships.

Lord Wandsworth College is now home to TWO Speedgolf Champions after an electrifying display from students, staff and parents at the British Speedgolf Championships.

Headmaster, Adam Williams was honoured for a third consecutive year, by winning the Senior British Champion title at Sunningdale Heath Golf Club. Mr Williams was previously British Amateur Speedgolf Champion in 2022, 2023 and finished runner-up in the British Pairs earlier this year.

This time, he was joined on the honours list by 5th Former, Harry who was crowned Junior British Champion in his first time competing at a Speedgolf tournament. Harry was invited to take part by Mr Williams, having volunteered as a runner at the British Pairs in May. He now admits to being sold on the sport: “I enjoy the pace of play and the fitness required. I felt amazing when I won the Junior British title and was extremely proud of my achievement.”

More than 50 players took part in the tenth edition of the Championships, where competitors (both PGA Professionals and amateurs) were challenged to combine pace with shot accuracy. The aim of Speedgolf is to achieve the lowest number of shots, combined with the shortest time taken to play a round.

Speaking after the event, Mr Williams reflected on the success of the competing Lord Wandsworth contingent, which included staff, students and parents: “I am so proud of the team from LWC, which continues to go from strength to strength. Congratulations, in particular, go to Harry who put in a stellar performance, with a remarkable score. We always encourage our students at LWC to try a wide range of different things to find the paths in life that bring them the most joy, I’m delighted Harry has discovered Speedgolf.”

He went on to add, “The true joy of Speedgolf is its inclusive, diverse nature and the camaraderie and sense of joy at the Championships was palpable. Speedgolf will help you explore the outer edges of the game. It declutters the mind and in almost every case helps improve your own play.   You also get to see golf courses at their best in the early morning and late evening. It enables you to feel alive.”
