LWC Celebrates Foundation

Sarah Walker | 1 April 2025

LWC was founded with the aim of widening worlds.

A generous bequest from Baron Sydney Stern proposed a College be formed to educate the orphaned children of agricultural workers.

More than a hundred years later, the LWC Foundation continues to perform this crucial function for those who have lost the support of one or both parents.

This year’s annual Foundation Day was a celebration of the charity and its life-changing work.

The event, on Thursday 27th March, was attended by LWC students, parents, Sternians and invited guests. It offered an opportunity to hear from those whose lives have been touched by the work of the Foundation.

It included stories from Foundation students, including Sixth Former, Oscar, who spoke of the impact music has had on his life and his journey to become an accomplished cellist.

2nd Former, Tolu talked about the opportunities offered to her through LWC, which have led to her competing at a national level in both football and athletics.

Sternians, Alvin, Scotia and Alice shared their experiences of being Foundation pupils, resulting in the broadening of their horizons . Meanwhile, former Foundationer, Rianna gave an insight into how her journey has taken her to China, where she continues to study Mandarin, thanks to a love of the language developed at the College.

An emotional speech by Michelle, the mother of a Foundationer, also told of the positive impact that a place at LWC can have on the whole family.

The Lord Wandsworth College Foundation currently supports 50 students, but aspires to increase this number to 70 over the coming years. This would not be possible without the support of the LWC community and beyond (which has recently raised a record-breaking £170,000 for the Foundation during this year’s Giving Day and Iceland Trek).

The afternoon was concluded with a rallying cry from Headmaster, Adam Williams, who urged the audience to live a ‘life less ordinary.” He emplored: “Go and do something – anything – that makes your heart race, your mind expand, or your soul shine. Then please let me know. I’d love to hear the stories, they would love to hear the stories. The rest will take care of itself.”
