GCSE Results
2024 – Headmaster’s View

Adam Williams | 22 August 2024

We can all remember a results day. A snapshot in time recorded so vividly in our minds, that we often recall something about it many years later. The feel of the brown envelope, the reactions of those patiently waiting around us, the smell of the room we were in.

In August 2024, 119 Lord Wandsworth pupils experienced that moment and we’re delighted with their results. Over 46 per cent of grades achieved were 9-7, an increase on last year. The pass rate at LWC for this year is 96 per cent, again marking another year-on-year increase. Among those achieving particularly high grades are Rebecca (ten grade 9’s), Millie and Oxana (achieving nine grade 9’s alongside other qualifications) and Phoebe (with eight grade 9’s). Henri, Olivia, Charlie, Alice and Zach also achieved a minimum of five grade 9’s in their results.

Whilst we revel in this moment with those who’ve worked so hard, it’s also worth reflecting on the thrill that this is just the beginning. GCSE results are much like those candid photographs which capture the spontaneity of a moment. They are markers in time. Moving forward, there is so much more to look forward to. As I write, I’m conjuring up liminal images of doorways, staircases, empty airport lounges or breathtaking horizons where it’s difficult to see where the sea ends and the sky begins. We’re drawn to these pictures because they make us feel as though we’re on the precipice of something new, whilst at the same time, not being there yet.

For our LWC pupils celebrating results this year, each journey has been shaped by personal challenges, triumphs and discoveries. Some have embarked on this path with confidence, while others found strength along the way, but all have arrived at this moment with results that speak volumes. These grades are snapshots in time, guiding our students towards their own liminal spaces offering bright and limitless futures beyond, yet to be discovered.

As these students prepare to take their next steps into the exciting world of our exceptional and record-breaking Sixth Form, their achievements and experiences to date at LWC serve as an enduring inspiration. Their journey is far from over, and the paths ahead promise to be as rewarding and transformative as the ones they’ve just travelled.  So, let’s take courage from them, and however long ago we sat our own exams, let’s start again on that journey of discovery and begin by finding that inspirational view.
