An inspiring trip for our 4th Form this term who visited Hadrian’s Wall to support their Latin and Classics GCSEs.
‘We are all studying Latin or Classics for GCSE, and this trip gave us a chance to see what we had learnt first hand. The journey from school to the hostel was a long seven hours. Over the weekend, we visited multiple Roman forts, which required a lot of walking (but it was worth it to see the views!). These forts were where the soldiers who manned the wall lived and where they spent the majority of their time. Unsurprisingly, the fort was not as spectacular as it was in its glory days, but it was still very interesting to see how much historians could piece together so much about the Romans from the little information they had.
We also had the opportunity to visit some museums that gave us more insight into the living conditions of these soldiers and their families. They were very interactive, and there was even a Roman board game available to play at one of them. Whilst at the fort named Vindolanda, there was an informative but humorous play depicting the time before the wall was built, and what was happening as it was being built. It showed the conflicts occurring across what is now the border between England and Scotland. Despite the weather not being on our side, the play was very enjoyable in the end and helped educate us about that time period in England.
To sum up, it was a brilliant trip! We learnt so much and had fun doing so!
Many thanks to all the staff who came with us and gave up their weekend to escort us.’
