Sutton House
Sutton sits towards the South end of the campus surrounded by stunning green space, rolling hills, fields and woodland. We are fortunate enough to have outstanding facilities and spacious accommodation – it used to be the manor house of Long Sutton Village. The short walk away from the main College buildings allows us to foster a very strong sense of community and house spirit.
We are not ones for buzz words, but two words at the forefront of our vocabulary are support and responsibility. If things don’t go as planned, or mistakes are made – which, incidentally, is allowed to happen in the House and beyond – we do all we can to support those in question.
We believe fully in education as a team effort and we aim to communicate and involve parents every step of the way. I’m supported in House by a team of excellent tutors, our wonderful matrons, Becky and Sue and my second in command, Ed Firth, our brilliant Assistant House Parent.
We expect our young men to take responsibility for their lives; the bigger picture is that when they leave school they will be fending for themselves to a greater degree and there is no better place to start learning how to do this than in the caring and compassionate environment in which we are so lucky to live.
Please do come and visit us at Sutton.

Louis Yates is Housemaster of Sutton House at Lord Wandsworth College, where he leads a vibrant community of boys aged 13–18. Since joining the College in Easter 2022, he has played a key role in boarding life, bringing over a decade of experience in boarding school environments. He has served as Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead and DSL for E-Safety, and has held roles at previous schools including Head of Sixth Form, and Head of Psychology. He began his career as a sports coach—an experience that continues to shape his relational, character-focused approach to working with young people.
Louis lives in the boarding house with his wife Emma, a prep school teacher, their young family, and their two dogs. Family life sits at the heart of his approach to boarding, helping to create a warm, supportive, and authentic home environment for the boys in his care.
A proud family man and member of the Institute of Boarding, Louis has contributed to its blog and looks forward to sharing further reflections in the future. His leadership ethos, developed in part through completing a Master’s in Educational Leadership, is values-driven and coaching-centred, grounded in emotional intelligence. Values-driven at his core, he sees emotional intelligence and character development as fundamental to a young man’s education. He is committed to guiding young men through consistency, meaningful conversation, and positive role modelling.
A love of leadership is what drives him. He regularly seeks out new perspectives through podcasts, sporting autobiographies, and the work of thinkers such as Daniel Goleman and Ryan Holiday. His leadership is also shaped by life beyond school—he is a family man, and the values he lives by at home ripple through his work, grounding his approach in consistency, care, and authenticity.
Originally from the West Midlands and an avid Aston Villa supporter, Louis is a sportsman at heart. Beyond the classroom, he is deeply committed to the role of sport in developing character, leadership, and resilience. He coaches junior and senior teams in hockey, rugby, and cricket, drawing on his own experience as a national-level swimmer, regional hockey player, and 1st XI league cricketer.
