Hazelveare House
One of the strongest elements of the pastoral care system at Lord Wandsworth College is the integral role that the House system plays for every student in the College. Hazelveare House is no exception, with a broad range of Day students living with Full, Weekly and Flexi boarders in a happy, settled and family environment (if you can imagine a family of many boys!).
Tom joined Lord Wandsworth College as a History teacher in 2007 and has since contributed across academic, pastoral, and co-curricular life. A former pupil himself (1996–2001), he is a Sternian, giving him a strong personal understanding of the College’s ethos from both perspectives.
He has been Houseparent of Hazelveare since 2017, having previously served as Assistant Houseparent in Bramley and Summerfield Houses. He also led the History Department for five years and was Head of Boarding from 2022–2026. Pastoral care is central to his work; he is a safeguarding officer, delivers safeguarding training, and has been Foundation Tutor since 2023, supporting Foundation pupils across the College.
Tom runs Hazelveare alongside his wife Helen, an English teacher and Head of EPQ; their two daughters also attend LWC. He believes a boarding house should feel like a home, helping pupils develop empathy, emotional intelligence, and character.
An experienced History teacher and AQA examiner, he also contributes to enrichment and PSHE programmes. He holds the BSA Boarding Diploma and an MA in Educational Leadership. Outside work, he enjoys coaching rugby and cricket, playing golf and tennis, and supporting Reading FC.

Meet the Matrons
Patsy Maxwell-Aylwin – Matron
Patsy has been a dedicated Matron at Hazelveare for the past two years, where she plays a vital role in supporting the day-to-day wellbeing of the boys. With a calm, caring presence and a genuine commitment to pastoral care, Patsy helps create a warm, supportive environment in which pupils feel safe, valued, and able to thrive.
Before joining Hazelveare, Patsy served as Matron at Bramley House, where she developed extensive experience in caring for young people in a boarding setting. She brings this wealth of pastoral expertise to her current role, offering both practical support and a compassionate ear to those in her care.
Outside of her work, Patsy enjoys making the most of her free time by travelling and exploring new places. She is also a keen gardener with a true green thumb, taking great pleasure in nurturing plants and spending time outdoors.
Kate Flood – Matron
Kate is a proud mum of three children and embraces the busy, ever-changing nature of family and boarding life. Supporting children through their different stages is something she values deeply.
She previously worked in an infant school in a pastoral role, supporting young children’s emotional wellbeing and development, which helped shape her caring and supportive approach.
Over the past eight years, Kate has run two businesses, an achievement she takes great pride in. She enjoys staying busy, being creative, and developing her own ventures alongside family life.
She lives with her husband Charlie and their two dogs, Reggie and Ronnie, who bring energy and fun to the household. Kate also has a creative side, having studied performing arts for four years, and continues to enjoy singing as a joyful outlet.
