High-Performance Paddling
Developing the Next Generation of Paddlers
Lord Wandsworth College has a proud and longstanding reputation as one of the UK’s leading schools for kayaking. With decades of success in the prestigious Devizes to Westminster International Canoe Race (DW), the College has established itself as one of the country’s foremost schools for competitive paddling, regularly fielding one of the largest and most successful school entries.
Building on this exceptional heritage, the College’s High-Performance Paddling Programme provides ambitious young paddlers with a clear pathway to develop their skills, compete at the highest level and enjoy all the personal benefits the sport has to offer.
A Progressive Paddling Pathway
The programme is designed to support pupils at different stages of their paddling journey through three distinct pathways:
-
Pathway Programme – introducing 4th Form pupils to the technical, physical and tactical foundations of competitive paddling.
-
High-Performance Programme – enabling pupils from the 5th Form to the Upper Sixth to train and compete at an advanced level.
-
Devizes to Westminster (DW) Programme – preparing Lower Sixth pupils for the iconic Devizes to Westminster International Canoe Race, continuing a tradition of excellence that spans generations.
Each programme is carefully structured to complement pupils’ wider school commitments, allowing them to balance paddling with other sports, academic studies and co-curricular opportunities.
Why paddle?
Flat-water racing is a demanding and rewarding sport that develops far more than physical fitness. It challenges pupils to build technical skill, endurance, resilience and teamwork while fostering confidence, determination and self-discipline.
Training takes pupils beyond the classroom and onto the water, encouraging a strong connection with the natural environment while developing organisation, independence and leadership. The shared commitment required to train and compete together creates lasting friendships and a unique sense of camaraderie.
Expert Coaching and Outstanding Opportunities
Led by experienced coaches, the programme provides expert technical instruction, strength and conditioning, race preparation and regular competitive opportunities throughout the year. Pupils compete in school fixtures and public events, gaining valuable race experience as they progress through the programme.
For many, the journey culminates in competing in the Devizes to Westminster International Canoe Race, with opportunities to achieve podium success and, for those with the ambition and ability, continue competing at regional, national and international levels beyond their time at Lord Wandsworth College.
Building Strong Foundations
The Pathway Programme is designed specifically for pupils who are new to competitive paddling or looking to develop their potential. The focus is on building strong technical skills, stamina, strength and confidence in a supportive environment.
As pupils progress, they are well prepared to move into the High-Performance Programme, where they can continue their development and work towards competing in some of the sport’s most prestigious events.
The Pathway
4th Form
The Pathway Programme is designed to introduce 4th Form pupils to competitive paddling while allowing them to balance their involvement with other sports and the wider co-curricular life of the College. Through expert coaching, pupils develop the technical skills, strength and endurance needed to compete with confidence, taking part in races throughout the year. The programme provides a strong foundation for progression into the High-Performance Programme, with the ultimate aim of preparing pupils to excel in the Devizes to Westminster International Canoe Race and beyond.
5th Form
The High-Performance Programme offers 5th Form pupils the opportunity to develop their potential in one of the College’s most successful sports. Designed for those with ambition, whether experienced paddlers or those looking to excel in a new challenge, the programme combines expert coaching with a structured approach to developing technique, strength, endurance and race experience. Training is carefully balanced alongside GCSE studies, enabling pupils to pursue sporting excellence while maintaining their academic commitments. As they progress into the Sixth Form, participants are well prepared to compete in the prestigious Devizes to Westminster International Canoe Race and beyond.
6th Form
The Devizes to Westminster (DW) Programme gives Lower Sixth pupils the opportunity to take on one of the UK’s most iconic endurance events while developing exceptional levels of fitness, resilience and teamwork. Through expert coaching and a demanding but rewarding training programme, pupils build the skills, strength and confidence needed to compete in the Devizes to Westminster International Canoe Race. Alongside the challenge of the race itself, the programme fosters commitment, camaraderie and personal growth, with many pupils progressing to compete at an even higher level beyond their time at Lord Wandsworth College.
