House Handbook

Houseparents Jane and Matt Mitchell arrived in August 2015 from Repton School in Derbyshire where they were houseparents of Garden House for 7 years. Jane taught French and German, coached tennis and set up the Sixth Form trip to support a school in Ghana whilst Matt taught ICT. They have a daughter Zoë in Gosden House at LWC and a son, Joel, who is studying in Holland where he can continue his passion for hockey, having spent his gap year in South America. They are delighted to be back in this part of the world having previously spent six wonderful years at Christ’s Hospital in Horsham.

Park House is a vibrant house where girls are supportive of each other in a familial environment. The location could not be more perfect and advantage is taken of the surroundings with joint BBQs with Sutton House, rounders on the field, morning runs and simply enjoying the wonderful view over the cornfields and woods whilst reading a good book!  Compassion and empathy are key to the house ethos and Park girls are certainly global citizens, aware of and engaged in the world around them.

Good study habits are encouraged early on and the new 3rd Formers are lucky enough to have studies in the barn where they are supervised by the tutor and prefect on duty. The Sixth formers have spacious rooms where they complete prep and independent study. The girls have a cosy Junior Common Room with an extensive library. They have allocated reading time every evening and complete book reviews. There are many DVDs including a large World Cinema collection to broaden their horizons and tastes, as well as to enhance their language skills. The Sixth Form have their own Common Room, again with a library and DVDs, but perhaps more mature in taste. Sixth Formers also have the privilege of having breakfast in house! We have a beautiful new kitchen big enough for special meals and celebrations and cosy enough for hanging out over hot chocolate after prep.  An enormous Common Room in the centre of the house is used not only for pool, table tennis and playing on the Wii, but also for house meetings and social events on a Friday night. At the weekend there may be  a simple chocolate fondue evening, film night, board game night, karaoke or rounders on the field for boarders and any girls who choose to stay over.

We are proud of each and every Park girl, who develop their own individual talents whether it be academic, sporting, musical or as a leader and motivator of others, or just as importantly developing traits such as integrity and courage. We ensure that we get to know each girl in our house really well, whether day or boarder so that we can encourage and motivate her to be the very best version of herself.

We are lucky to have such a superb staff team, including 6 tutors and 2 matrons, supporting them both pastorally and academically. Our resident tutor Holly Hunter has been at LWC for three years and she plays a pivotal role in the smooth running of the house. Our Matrons Jacqui and Mel are like fairy godmothers who grant wishes like clean laundry or a well needed hug in the middle of a hectic day.

Do come and visit us for yourselves, so that you can get a feel for the unique atmosphere that embraces all we do at LWC. We would be delighted to see you in Park House and to give you a tour of our wonderful home.
