Applying for a Place

How does a child qualify for a Foundation Award?

  • The child has lost the support of one or both parents through death, divorce or separation
  • The child must have been born in Great Britain, N Ireland, the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands or who would have been so born if his/her parents had not been employed for the time being abroad.
  • The parent has not remarried or is not cohabiting.
  • The child is in need of pastoral care and support and needs the stability and security of a structured environment.

Selection Procedure

  • Applicants send in completed forms and documentation between 1st April and 30th September in the year prior to entry. Early application is recommended.
  • A report is requested from the child's current school.
  • The Foundation Director or Foundation Secretary will visit the parent at home.
  • After the initial assessment some children will be invited to take entrance tests during the autumn term. Tests are in maths, English and verbal & non-verbal reasoning (IQ).
  • If the required academic standard is reached the candidate and parent may be invited to a Selection Day, which takes place in the January or February.
  • The Selection Committee makes recommendations to the Trustees.
  • The Trustees consider recommendations and decide on Awards.
  • All candidates are notified of decisions by the end of February.

There is no automatic entry into the 6th Form. Parents/guardians of Foundation pupils will be invited to apply for a 6th Form Foundation Award at the appropriate time and pupils must meet the Foundation criteria and academic standards required.

Selection Criteria

  • Priority is given to children who have lost a parent through death.
  • The need for pastoral care and support.
  • The need for stability and security in a structured environment.
  • The candidate's home and family situation.
  • The ability to cope academically, integrate socially and contribute to the College community.
  • The family's financial circumstances.

Selection Days
These take place annually during January and February. Parents and candidates will have interviews with the Headmaster.  During the day parents and candidates will have a tour of the College and boarding houses, stay for lunch and meet other members of the Selection Committee.

What do parents/ guardians have to pay?

All parents/guardians have to make a financial contribution towards their child's education.

  • Parental contributions are means tested and reassessed annually.
  • Parents may be asked to apply for grants from other trusts and charities.
  • The balance of the fees is paid by the Lord Wandsworth Foundation.
  • Parents may apply to the Foundation for help with music tuition fees and academic school trips in case of financial hardship.
  • Parents may be eligible for a means tested grant towards school uniform.

How to apply?

There are three points of entry each year: 1st form (11+), 3rd form (13+), and 6th form (16+). The closing date for applications is September 30th in the year prior to entry. The Trustees will consider late applications in certain circumstances. Please contact the Foundation Office for further details. You are welcome to make an appointment to visit the College during term time or to attend one of our Open Mornings or Open Evenings.
